Xavier Becerra, HHS candidate, largely escapes attack by the Republicans
WASHINGTON – With measured, prudent remarks, Xavier Becerra deflected attacks by Republican senators on his files in hopes of undermining his nomination to head the Department of Health and Human Services.
If confirmed, as was likely as of Tuesday afternoon, Becerra will be the first person of Latin American descent to head the health department at a time when health care inequalities and health outcomes are the focus of the national conversation. Becerra is currently the California Attorney General and has no medical expertise. Some wondered why the Biden government nominated him.
