Wednesday’s forecast that another 80,000 people will die this month comes because health professionals are trying to increase vaccinations to stay ahead of the more communicable variants that they fear will skyrocket cases again could drift.

The best way to prevent variants from dominating the pandemic, said the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, is to take quick vaccination and health measures to prevent the virus from replicating to keep it from spreading.

Right now, the US isn’t vaccinating fast enough to stay ahead of the curve, but “we’re getting better,” Fauci told NBC News on Wednesday.
