Senate GOP Adopts Michigan COVID-19 Funding Bills
Senators approved measures that would send nearly $ 2 billion to schools, businesses and families trying to avoid evictions but holding back hundreds of millions more supplies and language included several Senate Democrats called racist.
The aim of the bills is to determine how the federal funds approved by federal legislature and former President Donald Trump in December are to be distributed. The measures are different from the House’s plan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s proposals. They point to lack of consensus on legislation and ultimately to delays in those who need help most to get money.
“We need to be smart about how we use this federal aid to maximize benefits for everyone in our state,” said Jim Stamas, chairman of Senate Appropriations, R-Midland, in a post-vote statement.
