Illinois is the first state to remove the cash deposit
Illinois will be the first state to remove the cash deposit.
The state’s Democratic Governor JB Pritzker signed a major police and criminal justice overhaul on Monday that will lift the system from January 2023.
The bill also requires all police officers to be equipped with body cameras and sets national standards for the use of force, de-escalation and arrest techniques for law enforcement agencies.
“This legislation is an essential step in reducing the systemic racism that plagues our communities, our state and our nation, and brings us closer to real security, real fairness and real justice,” Pritzker said in a statement.
Other states including New York and New Jersey have already restricted the use of the deposit
