1 dead after a car crashed into a retention basin in Fleming Island, MPs say
FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – One person died after a vehicle crashed into a retention basin on Fleming Island early Sunday morning, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s office.
The Florida Highway Patrol website shows that at around 3:25 a.m., soldiers were called to the fatal crash in Neptune Park on Thunderbolt Road.
The sheriff’s office said his dive team responded. Clay County Fire and Rescue was also on site.
Later that morning, a tow truck pulled the car, a silver four-door Nissan Altima, out of the retention basin.
Several neighbors told News4Jax they often hear cars speeding on Thunderbolt Road, which leads into the park where the pond is located. They said Sunday around 2 a.m. was no different.
