Unemployment in South Africa reaches highest point on record
Stats SA has released the latest unemployment figures for the fourth quarter of 2020, showing that South Africa’s unemployment rate has reached its highest point since the Quarterly Labor Force Survey (QLFS) was launched.
The QLFS results show that around one million people moved out of the ‘non-economically active’ segment of the population, which is broadly defined, but includes those who lost their jobs during the Covid-19 lockdown, from new to the workforce.
However, the division between those who returned to employment and those who are now classified as unemployed leans sharply towards the latter.
