“They have thrown us to the dogs” – SAA workers
Many South African Airways (SAA) employees have not received wages for nearly a year as unions continue to push for workers to receive their full back wages, according to a Sunday Times report.
These workers have had to make drastic lifestyle changes to make ends meet, including moving out of their homes, incurring significant debt, and starting side businesses to help pay expenses.
“My husband had to sell his car and take the old one from his sister,” an SAA employee told the Sunday Times.
“It was a nightmare because they literally threw us to the dogs.”
The Department of Public Enterprises said that some unions are requiring workers to be paid all of their back wages, but noted that this is simply unaffordable.
