Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha – more name changes to come: Minister

The Minister of Art and Culture, Nathi Mthetwa, has announced several name changes in the Eastern Cape, including the city of Port Elizabeth, which will now be known as Gqeberha.

In a statement on Thursday (February 25), the minister said that the transformation of the naming landscape in South Africa is “a critical component of the heritage landscape as a whole.”

“It was necessary to change the name as it is part of a government program to transform the heritage landscape of South Africa. The names of the places we live in reflect the identity and cultural heritage of the people of South Africa, ”he said.
