DStv subscribers may be forced to pay TV license fees
The Department of Communications wants broadcasters like MultiChoice to be required to collect television license fees from their subscribers.
These are the comments of the Vice Minister of Communications, Pinky Kekana, during a recent meeting of the Communications Portfolio Committee.
SABC is facing severe financial challenges and one of the ways to increase revenue is to improve the collection of television license fees.
SABC CFO Yolande van Biljon told Parliament that only about 2.5 million of the 9.5 million TV license holders in its database liquidated their TV licenses last year.
“The SABC billed roughly R3 billion in television license fees per year, but was only able to raise around R791 million this year,” van Biljon said.
