The man in charge of Defense Department finances says he had no idea officials reached a deal with Cuba to purchase a shipment of an unregistered Covid-19 drug worth more than 200 million rand.

In addition to this, the Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, told Parliament that she was aware of the talks on the drug, manufactured by a Cuban-Chinese company and believed to be effective in the fight against the coronavirus.

Mapisa-Nqakula and his officials appeared before the Legislature’s Military and Defense Veterans Committee to account for the failed 200 million rand deal to import Heberon Interferon-Alpha-2B (also known as interferon) from Cuba.
