Booysens residents face a second night of uncertainty
JOHANNESBURG – Thousands of desperate residents of an informal Johannesburg settlement that was razed to the ground on Friday face a second night of uncertainty.
Preliminary investigations by the city of Johannesburg show that more than 760 huts were destroyed by a wildfire in Booysens.
The cause remains unknown. The fire started late Friday afternoon. According to eyewitnesses, assisted by strong winds, the fire took less than half an hour to spread from one side of this informal settlement to the other. Those who were able to grab valuables did so, but most lost everything.
