Calgary businessman sues Nenshi for defamation for allegedly suggesting he’s a gangster

A $190,000 lawsuit claims Mayor Naheed Nenshi defamed Calgary businessman Mike Terrigno in alleged public comments made in 2015 that suggested he was a gangster.

In a statement of claim, filed personally by Terrigno, the entrepreneur alleges Nenshi made comments to an unnamed member of council, whom he refers to as a whistleblower, and others on May 11, 2015.

The court action says Nenshi told the group: “You should stay away from the Terrigno family because Coun. Druh Farrell told me that . . . the Terrignos are mafia, are involved in organized crime and belong to the mob.”

That same day, the mayor is accused of making a second comment — attributed to a second whistleblower and member of council — that Terrigno alleges also slandered him.
