Arctic temperatures causing traffic troubles, school closures in and around Calgary

It’s not exactly a snow day, but many students in Rocky View Schools are getting a “cold day” break from classes as temperatures remain stubbornly low.

All of Alberta and Saskatchewan are under an extreme cold warning from Environment Canada. Temperatures in Calgary are only forecast to hit a high of -25 C today. With the wind chill it will feel like -40 C this morning and -35 C this afternoon, and Environment Canada is warning that frostbite can happen in minutes.

The following Rocky View Schools are closed for Tuesday:

  • Beiseker Community School
  • Chestermere High School
  • Fairview Colony
  • Indus School
  • Kathryn School
  • Langdon School
  • Prince of Peace Lutheran School
  • Sarah Thompson School
  • Tschetter Colony School
  • Westbrook School
