Australia’s top cop has written a scathing letter to Scott Morrison warning politicians to immediately report alleged crimes to police.
Federal Police commissioner Reece Kershaw wrote the strongly-worded memo as arguments rage about the handling of Liberal Party staffer Brittany Higgins’ rape allegations.
Commissioner Kershaw said any delay in reporting serious crimes can embolden a perpetrator and allow them time to commit more of them.
Ms Higgins claims she was raped by a senior colleague inside Parliament House in 2019 when she was just 24 and a series of ministers failed to help her.
She met with the AFP at the time, but did not pursue her complaint as she feared it would hurt her career.
