The West Australian Labor Party appears destined for another huge election win, with betting odds narrowing from its 2017 landslide victory.

This week four years ago, Sportsbet was paying $1.35 for the Mark McGowan-led party to snatch power, compared to $3 for the Coalition.

The day before the first vote was counted, Labor had firmed to $1.17 while the Coalition were $4.50.

Now, Sportsbet says Labor is “more popular” than champion thoroughbred racehorse Winx, firming from $1.05 to $1.03.

“That price betters Winx, who started at $1.05 in one of her 33 straight wins,” the betting group said.

Sportsbet said Labor accounted for 98 per cent of turnover while the Liberals/Coalition had drifted from $4.50 out to $11.

McGowan’s Labor Party is also expected to make gains on their 40 lower house seats and are $2.15 to win between 41-45 seats.

“Not since Winx have we seen a more confidently backed favourite,” Sportsbet’s Rich Hummerston said.

“The champ didn’t race in the west, but they have the human version in Mark McGowan.

“His popularity is through the roof over there.”

The Premier’s popularity has soared over his handling of the COVID-19 crisis – with at least one voter inking a tattoo tribute on his leg to the former navy lawyer.

He also got a staggering 91 per cent approval rating in September and had a preferred premier rating of 88 per cent in the latest Newspoll.

But both Mr McGowan and newly-minted Liberal leader Zak Kirkup say polls can’t be trusted.

Pointsbet has Labor to win at $1.01 compared to $14 for the Liberals.
