An armed man is reportedly holding a child as young as five hostage in a suburban home, prompting police to shut down the neighbourhood.
Tactical police are surrounding a home in Sunnybank on Brisbane‘s southside and issued an ’emergency declaration’ at 11.14am on Thursday.
Locals have been urged to avoid an exclusion zone between Dyson Avenue, Geddes Place, Beenleigh Rd and Ganda Place, which includes Banoon train station.

Police from two tactical units, the Special Emergency and the Public Safety Response Teams, are reportedly trying to defuse the situation.
Officers on the scene said the man was armed but would not reveal what the weapon was, according to The Courier Mail.
They reportedly said they are treating it as a hostage situation involving a child as young as five and are unsure if there is anyone else in the home.

Queensland Police said: ‘Residents within the exclusion zone are urged to follow the advice of emergency services on the ground.
‘Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.’
Trains that run along the Beenleigh line are currently skipping the nearby Banoon station but are still stopping at Sunnybank station and Coopers Plains station.
